III. BEST WISHES TO A RETIRING C-5 MEMBER: |
|
|
A. |
B. Jack Johnson, Professor of Crop and Soil Sciences, University of Georgia, |
|
B.J. was
born in Roopville, In 1956, B.J. Johnson joined the University of Georgia at the Griffin Experiment Station as an Instructor in Agronomy. He initially worked on several crops, and since 1972 has beenresponsible for the weed management and plant growth regulators research and related culturalpractices involved in the maintenance of warm- and cool-season turfgrasses. His research of thepast seven years has resulted in management programs whereby herbicide rates can be reduced byover 50% per year and still retain effective, full-season weed control. He has authored orcoauthored over 400 publications and presented over 140 invitational papers. B.J. has
been elected Chair of Division C-5 of the Crop Science Society of
America, and Chair
of the Turf and Ornamental Section of the Weed Science Society of B.J. and
his wife, Mavis, plan to remain in the Griffin, |

Morris E. Bloodworth, 77, died on October 22, 1997 in Bryan, Texas. Dr. Morris Bloodworth was born in Axtell, Texas. He served in the U.S. Marine Corpsin the Pacific during World War II. He earned a Master of Science degree from Texas A&MUniversity in 1953 and was appointed Associate Professor in 1956, subsequently earning his PhDin soil physics in 1958, and was promoted to Professor in 1960. Dr. Bloodworth served as Headof the Soil and Crop Sciences Department at Texas A&M University for sixteen years from 1963to 1979. He subsequently served as Director of International Programs from 1980 to 1984. Dr. Bookworth's soil physics research led to the development of the original design for what has become known as the USGA Method of root zone construction. He pioneered the conceptof a perched hydration zone and emphasized the need to develop techniques for physical analysesof the components to be used in root zone construction. The techniques he and his graduatestudents developed under grants from the United States Golf Association have led to the widespread use of this vital construction technique on golf courses and sports fields throughout theworld. The USGA Method was published in 1960 and promoted nationally by Dr. MarvinFerguson. Dr.s Bloodworth and Ferguson also formed a private service company which was thefirst to conduct physical soil analyses. Dr. Bloodworth's pioneering research in developing thebasic principles of the USGA Method of root zone construction was a major advance in the 1950's60's when soil compaction was becoming a severe problem on putting greens and sports fields. Dr.
Bloodworth was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science, the American Society of Agronomy,
and the Soil Science Society of |

Thomas Charles Mascaro, 81, died on May 6, 1997 in Pompano Beach, Florida. Tom was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 9, 1915. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Business from the Lansdale School of Business. Tom became involved in the turfgrass industry in 1936 starting with the West Point Special Compost based on materials from his father's mushroom growing operation, and subsequentlymarketed other speciality topdressing mixes for golf courses. In 1946 Tom and his brother, Tony, formed West Point Products. Tom and Tony developed and produced the first practical,mechanically-powered coring (Aerifier®) machine for turfed fairways and putting greens in 1946.Subsequently, Tom developed the first mechanically-powered vertical cutter for the control of grainand thatch on golf greens in 1952. Tom Mascaro held the patents for these devices, and aapproximately 100 other inventions, such as the first commercially produced, battery-poweredlawnmower in 1960. During
the 1950's Tom was particularly active as a frequent lecturer
at the newly evolving state turfgrass conferences around the Tom Mascaro was a very prolific photographer, lecturer and writer on a wide range of turfgrass cultural topics. He was one of the early pioneering leaders in the turfgrass industry andremained active for more than 60 years. He is survival by his wife, Dorothy, and three daughters, Stella Churchill, TammyShackleford, and Linda Mascaro, and two sons, John and Bobby Mascaro. |

Richard Conrad Skogley, 72, Emeritus Professor of Plant Science at the University of RhodeIsland died at his home in Exeter, Rhode Island on September 10, 1997. Dr. Skogley was born in Deer Lodge, Montana, on November 9, 1924. Subsequently, he served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre where he was a pilot. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Rhode Island in 1950 and a Master of Science degree in Agronomy from the University of Rhode Island in 1952. Subsequently, he earned a Ph.D degree in Soil Science from Rutgers University in 1957, where he then served on the faculty for three years. In 1960 he returned to the University of Rhode Island where he was responsible for conducting research and teaching activities in the speciality of turfgrass culture. He developed and released Jamestown Chewings fescue, Providence creeping bentgrass, and Exeter velvet bentgrass. Dr. Skogley's honors included the Green Section Award of the USGA in 1992, the Oregon Seed Trade Association "Man of the Year" Award, the University of Rhode Island Alumni RAM Award for Meritorious Service in 1992, and the New England branch of the Professional Grounds Management Society Environmental Public Service Award. Dr. Skogley served as Chair of the Exeter School Committee and the Exeter Town Council, plus Chair of the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees of the South County Hospital. At the University of Rhode Island he served as Secretary of the URI General Faculty and President of the University Club. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jane and
by two sons, Thomas Richard Skogley of Albany, Oregon, and Conrad David Skogley of Berlin, |
