  3. BEST WISHES TO A RETIRING C-5 MEMBER:
    Paul E. Rieke, was born May 13, 1934, in Kankakee, Illinois. He received a BSc in Agronomy in 1956 and an MSc in Agronomy in 1958 from the University of Illinois, and subsequently completed a PhD in Soil Science from Michigan State University in 1963.

    Following graduation Dr. Rieke was appointed Extension Specialist at Michigan State University working with soil fertility problems in crops. From 1963 to 1965 and then from 1981 to 1999 he served as Extension Specialist in Turfgrass. He was appointed an Associate Professor in 1968 and Professor of soil and crop sciences in 1972, and received Professor Emeritus in 1999.

    Dr. Rieke has taught Turfgrass Soil Management for 31 years to approximately 1,600 students Soil Science for 18 years, Soil Management for 11 years, and three other courses for 1 to 2 years

    As an Extension Specialist Dr. Rieke was active for a 20-year period including the development of 6 Turf-Tips video tapes and the Turf Hot-Line. He coordinated the Michigan Turf Conference for 19 years and served as editor/coeditor of the Michigan Turfgrass Conference Proceedings. He has published approximately 350 popular articles in the turfgrass area.

    Dr. Rieke, with his graduates, has conducted research on turfgrass cultivation, soil compaction, nitrate leaching, topdressing, irrigation, leaf mulching, wetting agents and sod production fertility, with 35 scientific papers published.

    Honors received include 1986 - Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America; 1990 -Outstanding Teacher Award of the College of Agricultural and Natural Resources Alumni Association; 1989 and 1999 - Outstanding Teacher Award of Agricultural Technology at Michigan State University; 1997 - USGA Green Section Award; 1989 - Honorary Member of Turf Producers International; 1999 - USGA Piper and Oakley Award; 1996 - Golf Course Superintendents Distinguished Service Award; 1994 - Meritorious Service Award of Michigan Turfgrass Foundation; and 1974 - E.B. Knight NACTA Journal Outstanding Paper Award.

    Service to the tri-societies by Dr. Rieke include C-5 Turfgrass Division Chair - 1972-73; ASA Board Representative - 1979-80; CSSA Associate Editor - 1975; Crop and Soils Editorial Board -1968-70; plus numerous other activiites. Dr. Rieke also has served on national committees such as Musser International Foundation Board of Directors, Professional Golfers Association Agronomic Advisory Committee, Golf Course Superintendents Association Membership Standards Committee, Publication Committee and Education Committee, and the USGA Turfgrass Research Committee.

    Dr. Rieke, and his wife Ann, have been married for 42 years and have two children, and now are enjoying five grandchildren. Paul has been active in leadership within his church, and will continue to actively serve these interests in his retirement.

    Note: From 1946 to 1951 - Turfgrass research papers were presented within Section V, Special Crops, of the Crop Science Division, American Society of Agronomy. There were a total of paper number of 6 in 1946, 16 in 1947, 17 in 1948, 12 in 1949, 10 in 1950, and 7 in 1951.

    In 1952 Division XI of the American Society of Agronomy included a session on Turfgrass Management. The year, chair, and number of pepers was as follows: 1952 - R.R. Davis - 7; 1953 - M.H. Ferguson - 6; and 1954 - W.H. Daniel - 6.
