CO15 Turfgrass Science, Division C-5

The Div. C-5 business meeting was called to order by Milt Engelke at 4:27 p.m., 23 Oct., 2001 by chair Milt Engelke with 165 in attendance.  The minutes of the 2000 meeting were distributed via email and appeared in Crop Science; they were approved as reported by Roch Gaussoin, division secretary.

ASA Board Report, John Cisar. A dues increase appears imminent. Membership statistics reveals that 6% of Grad students are members and only 50% of the advisors are members. They’re also appears to be a significant number of presenters at the meeting which are not members. The Natural and Life Sciences Education Journal continues to lose money. Currently the Journal is distributed as two electronic and one hard copy. To save money the hard copy will be eliminated and possibly the cost absorbed into current membership dues. The status of Div. A-9; Production/Practitioner is no longer provisional.

CSSA Board Report, Milt Engelke. All C-5 feedback should be directed to Dr. Engelke for transfer to the CSSA Board. Costs of CSSA continue to escalate. CSSA currently has a net worth of 1.2 millin dollars. At the current income/debit rate it will operate in a deficit situation next year. Students memberships are down significantly.

Historian Report, Jeff Krans. Dr. Krans expressed the regrets of Historian Jim Beard who could not attend. The Historian report as prepared by Dr. Beard was distributed and approved with no additions or corrections.

Post ITS Report, Pam Charboneau. The ITS meeting in Toronto was attended by 388 people representing 22 countries. A Proceedings and Commemorative CD Rom will be mailed to all participants. Next Conference is scheduled in England in 2009. The Journal for this years meeting for nonmembers is available for $195.00.

NTEP Report, Kevin Morris. The status/formation of the USDA-ARS Turf Unit will be discussed at a meeting in Dallas, TX on 21-22 Jan. 2002. Input should be directed to Kevin Morris at NTEP

e-turf review, Bob Shearman. In 1999 C-5 established a Premier Web Site Committee Chaired by Bob Shearman with committee members; Bob Carrow, Pam Chrbonneau, Hannes Combest, Pete Cookingham, Ron Duncan, Kin Erusha, Roch Gaussoin, Tom Fermanian and Frank Rossi. The charge ofthe committee was to explore means of developing intensive information packages related to Turfgrass Science that would be web-based. Discussion within and outside the committee lead to a concept of an electronic journal entitled “Electronic Journal for Turfgrass Science” or “e-turf review.” The “e-turf review” replaces any previous discussion of the Premier Web Site. A document prepared by the committee on 15 Oct. was distributed with the structure and scope of the “e-turf review” described. Lengthy and lively discussion followed. Any action was tabled until new business.

Turf Monograph, Nick Christians. Discussion about the need for another Turfgrass Monograph indicated that there was interest in producing another monograph. The previous turfgrass monographs have been very popular and have resulted in profit for CSSA.  A show of hands indicated that more than 50% of those in attendance felt the next monograph should also be available in electronic form.

New Journal-Plant Genomics, James E. Specht. A new journal of Plant Genomics was described. The C-5 division indicated unanimous support of the endeavor.

C-5 Web Site, Tom Fermanian. Address: http://c5turf.org. Committee members, T. Fermanian, Chair, R. Gaussoin, Z. Reicher, G. Stahnke. More than 2000 unique users in 2001. Discussion about the sites use and suggestions for improvement should be directed to any committee member.

Information Directory, Keith Karnok. The new edition will also be available on CD-Rom. Anyone interested in promotional brochure should contact Keith Karnok.

Slide Monograph, Keith Karnok. Currently assigned authors should contact Keith Karnok and indicate if they wish to continue to be involved.

Contemporary Issues, Haibo Liu. The committe, comprising Haibo Liu (Chair), George Hamilton, Jr., James McCrimmon, John Stier and David Williams distributed a survey to indentify issues for the committee. Results of the survey will be shared at the 2001 business meeting.

Poster , Brian Horgan. 1. Half size posters are an opportunity to display information for two days (instead of the traditional one day). This opportunity has both pro's and con's. For example, this method will deliver information more concisely. However, some of the people surveyed suggested that this is not necessarily a good thing considering the information may not be enough to understand the topic and since authors are only present one day, it may be difficult to get questions answered. 2. One potential problem is font size. It would be easy to shrink down the font size to fit more info, thus making it hard to read. 3. Maybe too crowded around the poster if both authors are present at the same time. Our recommendations as a committee are as follows: If half size posters are to be used the committee recommends the following: (1) a minimum font, (2) a printout or executive summary of the info on the poster table with contact information should the author not be present, (3) eliminate one of the three poster sessions to free up time and minimize overlapping and concurrent sessions, (4) stagger authors presence over the two-day period to minimize congestion next to the posters.

C-5 Associate Editors, Karl Danneberger. There are currently four associate editors. From 1 Aug. to 1 July 2001 42 manuscripts were submitted with 20 being released, resulting in a 52% acceptance. Currently C-5 does not use a Technical Editor. With current concerns about turn around time etc. a motion to have a Technical Editor from C-5 was moved, seconded and passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Nominating, Jeff Nus. The 2001 C-5 Nominations Committee comprising Jeff Nus (chair), Leah Brilman, Milt Engelke, and John Cisar selected two candidates to run for C-5 chair in the 2001 society elections.  The candidates were Dr. Bruce Branham, University of Illinois, and Dr. Gwen Stahnke, Washington State University at the Puyallup Research Station.  Dr. Gwen Stahnke was elected as the new C-5 Chair Elect and will follow Dr. Karl Danneberger as C-5 Chair following the C-5 Business Meeting during next year’s meetings in Indianapolis, November 10-14.

Awards & Professional Advancement, Jeff Nus. The 2002 C-5 Awards Committee comprised of Jeff Nus (chair), Leah Brilman, Milt Engelke, and John Cisar developed a list of C-5 members who warranted consideration for society-wide awards.  The committee also identified colleagues at those same institutions that could serve as nominators for these distinguished C-5 members.  Jeff Nus contacted each of these colleagues and requested that they serve as nominators.  Several of these people indicated that they would do so and subsequently developed the nomination packages for most society awards.

This year, Dr. Jeff Krans, Professor of Agronomy in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University received the distinction of being selected CSSA Fellow.  Dr. Kran’s research interests are in germplasm enhancement using in vitro cell selection techniques and turfgrass biology.  He served on various committees in the Society and as Chair of Division C-5.

Dr. Wayne W. Hanna was selected to receive the 2001 Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award.  The award is presented in recognition of significant career contributions in turfgrass science.  Dr. Hanna is a Research Geneticist and Research Leader with the USDA-ARS Crop Genetic and Breeding Research Unit at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, Georgia.  Dr. Hanna’s research involves the breeding, genetics, and cytogenetics of warm-season grasses.  His research unit has developed important forage and turf cultivars.
