III. RETIRING C-5 MEMBERS:
A. Dr. AI E. Dudeck -retired
as an Emeritus Professor of Environmental Horticulture at the University
of Florida on March 29, 2002 after 38 years of academic service in turfgrass
research, teaching, and extension.
Dr. Dudeck was born October 16, 1936 in
West Hazleton, Pennsylvania. He earned his B.Sc. and
Ph.D. degrees in Agronomy at Pennsylvania State University in 1958 and
1964, respectively.
Following graduation, Dr. Dudeck was appointed
Assistant Professor of Horticulture and Forestry at the University of
Nebraska. There he conducted turfgrass research on roadside stabilization and
maintenance and taught courses in turfgrass science and management.
In 1970, he was appointed Assistant Professor of
Ornamental Horticulture at the University of Florida Research and Education
Center at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His responsibilities were to develop new,
southern turf grasses by breeding and selection and to develop a turf research
center at that location. In 1974, he transferred to the main campus of the University
of Florida at Gainesville, Florida to continue turfgrass improvement
work and to coordinate the University of Florida state-wide turf grass
program.
He was a co-developer of ''Floratam'
St. Augustinegrass, which is currently being grown on 85% of Florida's home
lawns. He also cooperatively released 'FloraTeX' dactylon bermudagrass for use
as a low maintenance grass on sports facilities and golf course fairways and
roughs. 'FloraDwarf' hybrid bermudagrass was released as an ultra-dwarf ground
cover for golf course putting greens, grass tennis courts, and lawn bowls. Both
bermudagrasses are currently being licensed for production and use throughout
Australia.
Dr. Dudeck has been a member of the American
Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America since 1958.
He served as chair of Division C-5 in 1976 and as C-5 representative
to the ASA Board of Directors from 1985 to 1987. He also is a member of the
International Turfgrass Society, Florida State Horticultural Society, and the
Soil and Crop Science Society of Florida.
B. Dr. John "Jack"
Hall Ill -retired from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
(Virginia Tech), as Professor and Head of the Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences
Department on
December 31, 2001.
Dr. Hall was born in Toledo, Ohio,
August 15, 1941 and was raised on a golf course in Pekin, Illinois. His father
was a golf professional and "greenskeeper" at Pekin Country Club.
Jack received his Bachelor of Science degree in Floriculture and Ornamental
Horticulture in 1964, and his Master of Science degree in Floriculture in 1965
under physiologist Dr. Tom K. Hodges at the University of Illinois. He received
is Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1971 from Ohio State University under the
tutelage of Dr. Robert W. Miller. He served in the military from 1965 through
1967, spending one year in the Republic of Vietnam as a Tank Platoon Leader,
Battalion Support Platoon Leader, and Battalion Liaison Officer to Major General
Peers.
Dr. Hall began his agronomic career
at the University of Maryland in 1971, with a research, teaching, and extension
appointment in turf grass management. He provided leadership in the formation
of the Maryland Turfgrass Council, and conducted research in sod production,
weed control, and cultivar evaluations. He taught undergraduate turf grass management
and advised graduate students. His extension program included monthly articles
in "The Agronomist," significant trade association advisement, and
providing leadership to the annual Mid-Atlantic Golf Course Superintendent's
Association conference, and the Maryland Sod Conference.
In 1976, Dr. Hall accepted an Extension
position in Turfgrass Management at Virginia Tech. In this role he continued
his support of the turf grass industry through development of the monthly educational
newsletter "Tech Turf Topics," and the conduct of several short courses,
mini-courses, and turf conferences. In 1994, Dr. Hall accepted appointment as
Head of the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences and continued
in this role until his retirement.
Dr. Hall served on several national
association advisory committees to include service for the: Golf Course Superintendent's
Association of America, American Sod Producer's Association, and the Professional
Lawn Care Association of America. He was elected Secretary of the International
Turfgrass Society in Tokyo, Japan in 1989 and served in that role through 1997.
His service to the turfgrass industry has been acknowledged by his receipt of:
The Virginia Turfgrass Council (VTC) Award, the VTC President's Award, and the
VTC Silver Tray Award. He received the Virginia Tech Alumni Award for Extension
Excellence and the Gamma Sigma Delta Extension Award of Merit.

to a major increase in turfgrass use.
B. Fiftieth-Year Anniversary - In 1952 the American Society
of Agronomy allowed the grouping of turfgrass research papers in one session
within Division XI. This test arrangement was a follows:
Year |
Session Chair |
State |
Paper Numbers |
